Jane’s 10km walk for research on my cancer

In by Jane Ludemann

September is gynaecological cancer awareness month. 2 1/2 years ago I was diagnosed with a frequently incurable cancer – low-grade serous ovarian cancer. Help me improve its survivability for all women. I’m walking the Dunedin 10km this September to raise funds for research.

I’m walking the Dunedin 10km on September 1st to raise funds for research on my cancer and some of my incredible ex-workmates are walking/running the half marathon.

Why the 10km? I’ve had a long slow recovery from my broken leg last year, and my physiotherapist suggested that a half marathon might be a bit much. And because it’s been a long and slow recovery, I thought I should listen to them and do the 10km instead. I asked my husband how long he thought it would take me – and he said 2 hours. Somewhat depressingly the last time I did the Dunedin half marathon (twice the distance!) I did it in less than 2 hours. But I guess that’s the toll of age and cancer. And when it’s cancer you get pretty philosophical about these things. But it’s also good to beat expectations so I’m aiming for an hour and a half.

Approximately 100 000 women around the world are living with low-grade serous carcinoma/ovarian cancer. Nearly half are diagnosed in their 20s and 30s, and the median survival is a little over 8 years. Simply not enough. But as a field, cancer research has made huge progress, and treatments in other cancers could work in my cancer. So I’m asking you to help me fund the research to help researchers find the answers that are probably already out there.

I was diagnosed 2 1/2 years ago. With current medical treatments I likely have another 3 to 12 years to live. But in all likelihood I’ll live long enough to benefit from any research advances, if we can fund them now.

Cure Our Ovarian Cancer gives 100% of all donations (less a small payment fee if you pay by credit card) to research. Research to help young women like me. Research for knowledge that will benefit women forever.
